“Hollywood’s top composers take viewers inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world’s most beloved and mysterious music genre.” — July 25, 2017 Although it won’t win any prizes for narrative structure, Matt Schrader’s “Score: A Film Music Documentary” spotlights such a rich and fascinating topic — the craft of motion picture scoring — that its mere presence proves a feast for the eyes and ears. The film also offers one key aspect so often missing from documentaries […]

A robot developed by researchers at Georgia Tech has a knack for music that would have made Beethoven jealous. — July 17, 2017 Shimon is a robot that composes and plays his own beats. He uses a process called deep neural learning along with artificial intelligence to decode different genres of music eventually creating his own chimes on the marimba. Dr. Gil Weinberg, the director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, created Shimon nearly 10 years ago, but now […]

A process-oriented teaching approach to improvisation in music opens new perspectives for education and enhances creativity. — July 14, 2017 Watching musicians perform can be impressive, even more so when they improvise. The performers produce their works in real-time, and while improvising, they manage several processes simultaneously including generating melodic and rhythmic sequences, coordinating performance with other musicians in an ensemble and evaluating internal and external stimuli. All this is done with the overall goal of creating aesthetically appealing music. […]

Scientists are discovering that certain playlists can boost brain activity and treat anxiety and depression. — July 11, 2017 For many, music is the ultimate motivator. Our favorite songs get us off the couch and onto the crag or the trail. Athletes know music is a performance enhancer, and the science backs them up: Two years ago, a study by researchers at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario, showed that subjects who listened to custom playlists were consistently able to generate […]

Want to blast through your next project? Create a playlist that complements the work you’re doing. — July 3, 2017 Listening to music can help us focus on busy and noisy office environments. But to help us be truly productive, the kind of music we listen to should complement the work we are doing, according to Chris Bailey, author of The Productivity Project. Whether he’s writing or completing research for his next book, Bailey is almost always listening to a […]

The music industry is an unrecognizable place compared to just 10 years ago. — June 30, 2017 For an artist like Ne-Yo, who first tasted success in the early noughties, the transition has been hard to witness. I recently heard him speak at Web Summit alongside fellow music artist Tinie Tempah, Hans-Holger Albrecht, the CEO of Deezer, and Eric Wahlforss, the CTO of SoundCloud. While Ne-Yo, in particular, came across as slightly grumpy about the ‘good old days’ of the […]

This 3D-printed replica can put one of the world’s most famous violins in your hands. — June 27, 2017 Usually, we associate 3D printing with ultramodern technologies like cutting-edge medical implants or futuristic space fabrics. However, music technology researcher Harris Matzaridis’ ViolinoDigitale project has gone in entirely the opposite direction. What Matzaridis has created through the digital magic of additive manufacturing is an accurate replica of an original Stradivarius violin, the Sunrise Stradivari — one of the incredibly expensive and rare master […]

Nursing home residents with dementia who listen to a personalized music playlist may need less psychotropic medication and have improved behavior. — June 21, 2017 The individualized music program designed for nursing homes, called Music and Memory, didn’t improve mood problems, but patients who listened to music tailored to their tastes and memories did need less anti-anxiety and antipsychotic medication, researchers found. “Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can result in aggressive or other severe behaviors, which affect people’s lives and […]

YouTube, digital sheet music and apps have long been popular; augmented and virtual reality are likely to further reshape music learning. — May 9, 2017 One of the biggest challenges to traditional music learning is the need for practice. Students must play scales, chords and patterns over and over in hopes of developing muscle memory; for many, it is a daunting and tedious task. Research has shown that individual practice is often not productive because learners receive limited feedback and […]

I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!

Both of my children love their music lessons with Marcos. They look forward to their music lessons each week and come home eager to practice their new pieces. I especially love that he teaches them to compose their own pieces and inspires their musical creativity. Marcos is always positive and encouraging with my children, and he has a knack for bringing out their best. I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!

Marcos Moscat is a talented musician and instructor. His approach to teaching is kind and respectful. He encourages his students to study music that appeals to them. By attending to the interests of each student, Marcos is a master at nurturing student engagement. Our son, Jackson, has been taking lessons for over two years. Jackson is proud of his accomplishments at the piano and he enjoys the time he spends with his teacher. Both Marcos and Isabel are warm and […]
