Things to Consider When Buying Your First Piano

Before purchasing your dream piano, it’s important to consider a few factors that will help you make the right choice. Here are some key points to think about:

Type of Music

The music you want to play will influence the kind of piano you should consider. Classical and jazz pianists often prefer acoustic actions, like those found in grand pianos, which use gravity for a more authentic feel. On the other hand, digital pianos offer connectivity and beneficial features for composers and music producers. Gigging musicians might prioritize portability and functionality with a stage piano.

Commitment & Budget:

Pianos can be quite expensive, so if you need clarification on your level of commitment or are just starting, it makes sense to invest in a more affordable, entry-level instrument. There are pianos available for all budgets, so it’s important to do some research and find one that suits yours. You can refer to this article for more information on piano prices across different brands and tiers.

Space & Living Arrangements

Acoustic pianos, especially grand pianos, can take up a significant amount of space and have an unconventional shape. If space is a concern, digital pianos or keyboards are worth considering. In recent years, digital piano technology has dramatically improved, and even experienced pianists appreciate the quality of models like the Nord Piano 5. Additionally, headphone compatibility is a valuable feature for those living with others.

Before heading to the music store, take some time to think about these factors and write them down. It’s also a good idea to measure the space where you plan to place your piano and bring those measurements with you to the store.

New vs. Used Pianos

Buying a used piano can save you money and help the environment. However, it can be overwhelming and requires some effort. It’s best to shop with a professional, or someone experienced in pianos. You can also check with local music stores for trade-ins or rental programs.

Here are some tips for assessing a used piano:

  1. Lifespan: Acoustic pianos typically last 40-60 years.
  2. Cabinetry: Refurbishing the piano’s appearance can be challenging, so consider if you like the current condition.
  3. Reputable brands: If possible, buy a used piano from a well-known brand.
  4. Playability: Always play the piano before purchasing it. Test the tone, key action, and check if any keys are significantly out of tune.

Furthermore, inquire about how often the piano was played and tuned and how it was cared for. It’s also helpful to know the environment it was stored in. And, if possible, have a professional open up the piano and inspect it. There are detailed guides available if you want to do this yourself.

Remember, apart from acoustic pianos, there are also digital pianos available with a wide range of options.

It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!
