Research shows tunes can make your workout easier. Here’s how to take full advantage. — November 13th, 2018 As humans, we are hardwired to respond to rhythm. If you’ve ever reflexively tapped your toes, drummed your fingers, or bob your head to a catchy tune, you know this to be true. “It’s a very inherent thing,” says Jasmin Hutchinson, Ph.D., who’s an associate professor of exercise science and sports studies and the director for sport and exercise psychology at Springfield […]

Lullabies aren’t just for babies—they’re great for adults, too. Learn about the all-natural sleep aid that helps you fall asleep fast and wake up refreshed.  — August 31st, 2018 According to a recent article published by the Sleep Organization, using soothing music to wind down before bed each night is perfectly acceptable—even encouraged—as a relaxation technique. It turns out that bedtime listening can even help people with sleep disorders by boosting sleep quality and quantity. The benefits may not happen overnight—it […]

There are several studies relating to music and unborn children. A developing baby starts hearing sounds in the second trimester of pregnancy. However, there are debates about whether you should play music to fetuses or not.  — June 19, 2018 No one knows for sure if music affects a fetus development. Some studies indicate that fetuses can hear and react to sound by moving and others say newborns can recognize music their parents played for them when they were in the womb […]

Can music make us smarter? Research suggests that from as early as 16 weeks of pregnancy, when the auditory function is forming, babies begin their musical development. Their early adaptive exposure to sounds, including those familiar sounds of parents’ voices, enhance extraordinary processing skills. — December 11, 2017 Neuroscience teaches us that a child’s brain is plastic. By this, we mean it is malleable and can change. The first year of life, more than any other year will see the most rapid […]

Headphones can seem like a ‘must-have’ in a college library, a function of responsible students’ attempts to isolate themselves from the conversations and noises around them. However, another form of distraction may be coming right up those cables. — September 28, 2017 “Music with lyrics is very likely to have a problematic effect when you’re writing or reading,” said Clifford Nass, a professor at Stanford University. “Probably less of an effect on math, if you’re not using the language parts […]

An Oxford professor says high-pitched music accentuates the sweetness in food, making it more palatable to children. Don´t believe us? Keep up reading! — September 7, 2017 Parents of young children know that mealtimes can turn into a horrendous battleground, but it could be worse – you could add the sound of wind chimes into the mix. Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Oxford whose work in multisensory eating has influenced the chef Heston Blumenthal, has […]

Scientists are discovering that certain playlists can boost brain activity and treat anxiety and depression. — July 11, 2017 For many, music is the ultimate motivator. Our favorite songs get us off the couch and onto the crag or the trail. Athletes know music is a performance enhancer, and the science backs them up: Two years ago, a study by researchers at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario, showed that subjects who listened to custom playlists were consistently able to generate […]

Nursing home residents with dementia who listen to a personalized music playlist may need less psychotropic medication and have improved behavior. — June 21, 2017 The individualized music program designed for nursing homes, called Music and Memory, didn’t improve mood problems, but patients who listened to music tailored to their tastes and memories did need less anti-anxiety and antipsychotic medication, researchers found. “Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can result in aggressive or other severe behaviors, which affect people’s lives and […]

Playlists are played out. — June 7, 2017 With apologies to the dumbbell, the treadmill, this weird sledgehammer, and those extremely dubious girdles that pledge to electroshock your abs into existence for only three installments of $39.99 plus shipping and handling, the single most important fitness accessory in the world is the universal set of earbuds. I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!

I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!

Both of my children love their music lessons with Marcos. They look forward to their music lessons each week and come home eager to practice their new pieces. I especially love that he teaches them to compose their own pieces and inspires their musical creativity. Marcos is always positive and encouraging with my children, and he has a knack for bringing out their best. I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!
